The Battle of the Bones is a long time BBQ competition that is being sanctioned for the first time this year by the PNWBA.
There is a prize pool of over $10,000 in cash and prizes.
The event is capped at 20 teams (15 to be a qualifier), so don’t leave registering too late or you could miss out.
Compulsory people’s choice is a key part of this event with all the meat being provided. This is done along with a people’s choice beer and wine competition.

I will try this forum....Are chili scores combined with the meat scores to determine the grand champion? This is confusing in information sheet...
Thanks |

I am sorry for the delayed responce - I am "subscribing" to the topic so I can get back to everyone a little faster!
I spoke to our head judge, Stacia, and she confirmed that the Overall Prize Pool is strictly for the 4 typcial meat categories (Pork, Chicken, Ribs, Brisket). Chili will have an individual payout for Judges Choice and another payout for People's Choice.

Dear Sarah, I am in support of this event big time!! I am from Kansas City originally, a former KCBS Contest Official and early Certified BBQ Judge.
This contest reminds me of the "Great Lenexa Bar-B-Que Battle" held by the Lenaxa Parks and Recreation Dept. IT IS HUGE & they are so smart in allowing the teams to feed the public. In June 2006, I attended the 25th Anniversary Contest and they had I think 190 teams in attendance. Feeding the public REAL BBQ is HUGE. The public gets involved, tastes, compares BBQ, and brags about having gone that year. I truly hope the teams will all embrace this contest because I have seen this format's success!! Yes it is more work and the teams are rewarded by the smiles and compliments on the faces of kids, moms, dads and grandparent alike!!!
May I suggest that you give your counter-parts at the Lenexa Kansas Parks and Rec Dept and pick their brain trust to help you grow and succeed?? I am sure they would be happy to share their knowledge with you. Cheers!!

Scott,
Thank you for your support! I recieved your message about wanting to be an official Judge - are you sure you don't want to compete? I just returned to the office today so I will give you a call a little bit later to discuss it. I agree that it is truely a great event - all the local teams have a great time and it is a very successful event. Our only hold up on growth at this point is the number of teams - that is amazing about 190 teams for the Great Lenexa Bar-B-Que, I will be giving them a call to see how they continue to attract teams. Thanks for the information!

Hi Sarah, I will compete some day. Lack of equipment and funds are the limiting factors. When I can find the photos I took in 2006 of the Great Lenexa BBQ Battle, I will send you some. Tell the teams that Safeway is having a sale on the "ENTIRE" Pork Loins (which has the Baby Back Ribs underneath) for $1.79/lb until next Tuesday. They cannot beat that price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG
Those are what I am up smoking right now. YUMMY!!!!

| Teams, we are looking at amending our people's choice rules, so that we can get more of you here. WE NEED to hear from you on what will incentize you to come down to Central Point. Is it the distance, the amount of meat, etc? Can you please contact us here or you can contact me directly at matt.samitore@centralpointoregon.gov |

| It's the 100 pounds of meat that now makes it do'able but we, too are paid elsewhere. Wish this would have been the starting numbers. The original proposition was just not doable for us and many others. Wish you folks the best down there! |

Wishing all those competing at BOB the Best of Luck!
If the Compulsory Peoples Choice and Chili were not a requirement, I am certain this would be an easy Qualifier. 2 days of Peoples Choice Sampling and trying to cook for the Judges is asking too much for the average hobbyist Competition BBQ team. In January info for BOB was posted on the CBBQA forum before the PNWBA BOD voted to approve Sanctioning and it has gotten little response, the distance from the Bay Area to Central Point OR, is about the same for Seattle area teams so it leads me to believe the meat requirements are the deal killers here. Dropping the PC meats to 100 lbs and entry fee at this late date should be an incentive to make 15 teams, which I'm hoping is the case. This event has everything a cook could ask for at competition, hopefully with some of these things in mind planning 2013 BOB (and 25 teams) will be a destination spot for many of us.
These are my observations and not the opinion the BOD. I voted to approve PNWBA Sanctioning of BOB and wish to see its continued success. |

| Brian and everyone, we really appreciate your feedback. We are definitely still learning on what needs all the BBQ teams need to make our event a draw. We will be amending our rules to try to balance the bbq team and qualifying needs versus the fundraisng component. We would appreciate all the feedback we can get to make this event great for all involved. Im not sure we will make the 15 teams but really hope that PNWBA will consider us again next year with the amendments we plan to make collaboratively with you. Thanks again |
