Below is an excerpt from an e-mail I recieved from Roger Jones last night...

Saffron, John and Rhana,

It is with extreme disappointment that I must inform you that we are forced to cancel our 3rd Annual Evergreen State BBQ Championship.

I was informed last month by Rally Marketing that Cargill/Ranchers would not be providing our anticipated $5000 prize money. Cargill is eliminating the Ranchers Reserve promotional program to include sponsorships, trailers, marketing, etc. I attempted to reach out to Cargill directly but have not had any luck in soliciting any support.

More troubling has been King County Health's recent decision that we must pay for high hazard health permits for each and every BBQ team that participates in our sampling for charity day. Despite much negotiation, communication and some heated words on my part the lure of a $3500 or $4000 permit money grab by King County proved to be too much for me to overcome.

There is no words that can quantify the level of disappointment that I have at this point. We fully support your charity efforts with Mike at the Silver Firs Safeway and hope you will continue to support Safeway's charity efforts.

Thanks for your understanding.
Roger

SUCKS, indeed!! Katie and I had this on the calendar, for sure (was our first-ever overnight event two years ago). Sounds like Roger gave 'em a good fight, though.

So sad to hear this being a local Duvall boy myself. Any chance of finding another sponsor? Very disturbing about KC HD coming down on the sampling cooks. That really sucks. Has anyone had this kind of issue with other HD's?

JD, let me know if there's aything I can do to help.

It is amazing how the KCHD is extending their reach and influence into our cookoffs. As many of you know, I recently competed at the Santa Anita Racetrack cookoff in Arcadia, California (suburb of LA). About 1/2 of the teams participated in the Peoples Choice, in which the public purchased tickets and used them to buy BBQ samples from these teams. Every team sold out completely and I suspect they all sold more than $1000 of samples as the lines were long for hours.

The requirements to have a tarp on the ground, screened in canopies and hand wash stations was not too much to ask of the teams who all pretty much paid for their event costs.

Wish we could do more of this in the Northwest as it is frustrating to see the crowds attend our events but can't taste the BBQ (legally).

WOW, I am SO sorry to hear that the Health Depaertment is doing this to you! We will be in our 7th year of People's Choice tastings ans have never had to ge any additional permits. We are "excempt" because of how we set everything up according to Jackson County here in Southern Oregon. (We also don't have to tarp the ground or screen canopies.) There has to be away to get around all of this. If you ever want to talk about how we run Battle of the Bones, please feel free to email or call me.

King County Health department goes right along with the whole "We are happy you want to do business in this state, and now we are going to tax and fee the hell out of you until you all leave."

The state is short on cash and this is how they justify there jobs.

Welcome to King county!
