It's come to Madam President's attention that we have a number of our members who also enjoy the occasional "Bowl of Red". That is, we have Chili cooks amongst us and so, we'll post upcoming Chili Cook Offs (CCOs) that we know of in our area. If you have any additional, please feel free to send 'em to me and I'll post 'em here. So, grab your Hatch, your San Antonio Original or maybe some Mexene and reach for your pot!
(For additional info, note the contact in parenthesis)

Oct 20th Cabela's Homestyle CCO at the Lacey, WA Cabela's, Homestyle & CASI competitions (http://pugetpodcasi.us/)

Understand that Homestyle events and categories simply mean "Anything Goes" while CASI, Tolbert and ICS competition mean other rules apply. That's not to paint the picture they're difficult, as they're not. Just something to get used to. So, if you want to cook your favorite chili, odds are, you want to be in a Homestyle category of competition. It takes a LOT less to get into competition chili cooking than into BBQ. Even if you're not cooking, come visit a Chili Cook Off, see what goes on and above all, sample some of the best chili being made this side of Terlingua!

Thanks for the post - the June 2 event is coming right up. It's at the Silver Firs Safeway, where Mike Eagle is well known for promoting cooking competitions (chili and BBQ alike) as fund raising events. All you BBQers who have been wanting to try chili are more than welcome - free advice included! This will be both homestyle (anything goes) and CASI sanctioned (meat and sauce only - no visible veggies. Mike will provide hamburger to start the homestyle competition. Let me know if you have any questions - or preferably just to tell me you'll be there! lynnewhat@aol.com or kkmpeach@aol.com

I would like to share the e-mail I received from Ken Peach regarding the status of the Puget Pod and upcoming events:

Dated Aug. 3, 2012

Hi there fellow chili cooks. I hope all of you are enjoying our weather here in the Great Northwest. Remember, it could be worse - we could live in the Southwest and dry up or live in the East and wet up.

We have the Washington CASI State Championship coming up really soon on Sun 12 Aug at the Farmer's Market in Olympia, WA and the Puget Pod Championship on Sun 26 Aug at the Ranchhouse BBQ Restaurant just past Olympia. Now the problem is that CASI requires that all of their CCO's have at least 15 cooks turnin chili for a sanction which gives the cooks points to get to Terlingua. But most of all these two cookoffs must take place for the local pod to continue as a pod. Right now I have FOUR cooks who say they will be at both of the cookoffs and geez, four is just eleven short of fifteen cooks necessary to have a sanction. So, please let me know as soon as you know you are coming to cook at one or both (better) of the cookoffs. If we don't get the fifteen then after this year we will only be allowed to have only one CASI cookoff -Washington State CASI Championship. And only the top three Washingtonians will be eligible to cook at the International Cookoff in Terlingua.

Puget Pod was founded in 1986 and for the next 10 - 15 years was one of the top pods in CASI. Dues are a small fee of $10 for a single or $15 for a married couple. Do we want Puget Pod to fold after only 26 years?
Hopefully not, so let's get 15 cooks together - bring a friend, a relative, even a neighbor and come on down or up to the two remaining CASI cookoffs this year.

Thank you for your previous assistance and attendance at the CASI cookoffs in Washington state. I wish you a happy, healthy year. Ken

For anybody interested in not doing the full gut-busting iron-man labor day weekend!! We will be at this cookoff on Saturday, it is HANDS DOWN the best cook-off of the year!!!

Greeting Fellow Chili Heads,

I would like to take a few moments to encourage everyone to please come out on Saturday, September 1 to Cathlamet, Washington for the annual
Buzzards Breath Chili Cook Off. This event was one of my favorites of all time. You could not ask for a better venue right on the Columbia River at
marina. This event has been going on for almost 10 years and features some of the best homestyle cooks around as well as the best chili show in the
northwest. This will be the first year that the event is sanctioned so come on out and see what a great job the people and chamber of commerce of
Cathlamet do with this event.
Another good deal with this event is that Wahkiakum County (pop.4000 and no traffic lights in the entire county!) is likely the only county in Washington
where the health department is still under control of the people. So that means the Chili cooks will not have to go through any ordeals that are on par to drilling
for oil in Yellowstone National Park ( Washington cooks know what I'm talking about ).
Please continue your support of Northwest Tolbert and C.A.S.I. chili cook offs. You are a great bunch of cooks and I miss you so very much. Also
remember to please bring a friend to cook offs , we always need new cooks.

Viva Terlingua! Tom Rowe
