Dave Don't delete your post-it needed to be said.
I am a BBQ hobbyist because I still need my day job. But I have beaten every single big-name team you can mention at least once in my BBQ career. I was cleaning out some old files the other day and came across a scoring sheet from a rib festival in rockford, Illinois a couple years ago. Dr BBQ was GC, I was RGC and I took 1st in ribs, beating not only Dr BBQ but Smokin Triggers, QUAU, Texas Rib Rangers, and a whole bunch of teams that you see on TV.
I took a class with Pellet Envy a couple years ago. Also discovered that I competed against them a few years earlier and came in higher in overall and most categories at three different events.
Also found the scoresheet where I scored a perfect 180 in chicken, against just about every name-brand team you could mention.
I am a BBQ hobbyist-only because I choose to not call myself a pro |

Bob,
Don't let one or two loud voices stop you from anything! The majority are still an awesome group of people! Every year we have new young teams that are mentored and win!! I can always find someone at a cookoff that I enjoy spending time with!!

Wow! I must have hit a nerve. I am sorry to have offended any of you with my previous statements it was not my intent. I was merely expressing my opinion as I see it. Let me make something perfectly clear, “I do not consider myself to be a Professional BBQ’er it is something I am striving for and I have a long way to go. I do not consider myself or Smokey’s BBQ to be one of the top teams in the PNWBA; I have not been competing long enough with enough consistency to even be in the conversation. There are a lot of PNWBA teams that are much better than our team, and on any given weekend could beat us hands down. Just because you cook BBQ as a hobby does not mean that you are not a great cook and can’t compete at a top level with other cooks that do it for a living or consider themselves professionals, I don’t believe that in my previous post I implied otherwise and I will not own what I did not say just because some of you may want me to. I believe I also mentioned that there ARE professional BBQ teams within the PNWBA. I will go on to say that there are PNWBA teams that compete as a hobby that are top level teams in the USA no matter how you look at it. My opinion of a minor league system must be much higher than some of you that have expressed you disdain for my comments, I have no problem being considered a minor league Pro BBQ’er or even a casual BBQ Hobbyist, for that matter working his way up the BBQ competition ladder to a time in the future when I can be a full time BBQ Pitmaster Pro. Maybe JD said it better when he used the phrase “Backyard Enthusiast” instead of “casual BBQ hobbyist” but honestly what is the difference? We all have our own opinion of what the PNWBA is and is not for each of us, I will respect you and your opinion even if I don’t happen to agree with it just as long as you extend that same respect in disagreeing with mine. I want to say again I am truly sorry if my words where hurtful to any of you ... If they were just take them for what they are only words spoken into the wind which you have the choice to receive or not it is up to you.
I hope to see you all on the PNWBA or KCBS BBQ circut someday soon and you will be able to come up to me and tell me how your BBQ Enthusist/Casual Hobbyist team kick my self proclaimed Semi Pro butt ... or not, either way I hope we choose to remain friends even if we don't see eye to eye on everything. |

Well said James...no offense taken on my part. I know your goal is to raise your skills to the level where competition bbq will be your profession...I wish you luck.
Your comments did tweak a few noses (and rightfully so) when referring to the PNWBA as the minor leagues catering to backyard hobbyists. You know as well as I that is not the case. Hopefully your apology and explanation will quell the fires...see you in Chilliwack!
Cheers! JD |

The purpose of this thread is to keep us posted on the KCBS competition schedule for 2012, in the Northwest. I'll do my best to keep that current.
As a young fart, I used to demand to may Dad, "This is a free county. Don't I have the right to register my complaints?" In his wisdom, my late father used to say "Balance your right to dissent with your responsibility to contribute." I would ask, "Does that mean that after I give a lot to some organization, the family, my school, whatever, then I have the right to complain?" "That's close." He would answer but more to the point is this. When you ARE a contributing, giving, constructive member of some group and you feel the overwhelming urge to speak up about a problem (first think about it long and hard before you just blurt things out you'll want to take back later), consider doing so AFTER you have a solution AND you're prepared to work to make that happen. In other workds, criticize but in a contributing way. Criticize constructively! "Balance your right to dissent with your responsibility to contribute." I've always found them to be interesting words. I try to live by 'em. Just a thought.
From here on out, I'll focus on the KCBS schedule if y'all want that. If not, I have other things to do. |

| Cant think of anyone that can make there entire living of of BBQ competitions. Most of the professionals use the contests to market something else lessons, sauces, rubs, etc. I am OK with being a hobbyist because it means I am doing this for all the right reasons; good friends, good times and good food. as for the PNWBA being the bush league how did all the teams from our organization that went to the Jack this year place? Does not matter where you compete as long as it is for all the right reasons. Good food is Good food. |

| It would seem that the Boise Music Festival bbq comp may well NOT be happening this year. The organizer from last year, is now behind the Ribfest in Meridian (just outside of Boise) the first weekend in July. I may be wrong. It may still happen with other management but so far we see nothing pointing that way. If we hear something, we'll let you know. |

| Direct from the horse's mouth - the Boise Music Fest honchos are requiring a guarantee of 30 teams (while they prefer 40) before they will host the event. The organizer, Teresa, who IS behing the Ribfest this year, sees no way to do that. So, I see no BBQ Comp at the Boise Music Fest this year. Thanks to John Hunt (Smokin' Nations BBQ) for the latest update. |

OMG!!! Wait until you see what the Clearwater Resort Casino just announced about their Grill for a Grand event. The 3rd annual happens this Sept 2-3!! It does NOT conflict with any PNWBA event. This is the one where "Dances" took Grand and we took Reserve last year and it was a first class affair with outstanding hosts. I'm not gonna spill the beans. I am just impressed that what is driven essentially by One Man, has stepped up to be one of the top money events in the NW. I'll wait until Roy makes an appearance here and tells you. Holy Smokes! Cant' wait. |

| Recently, speaking with a couple event organizers and inquiring specifically about that it seems that the events to which we are being added dictate when we will compete. When the comps are stand-alone events, themselves, I can only think the sponsors don't want to spend Sunday away from home/church/family/etc but that's speculative on my part. Hey ROOKIE48 - DAVE COMPTON There's a topic for you to follow up on if you like. (Of course this most recent event, Kla Ha Ya Days is a Sat-Sun event.) |

It's there on the 2nd of july should be 21st-22nd of July. You should be able to register for this event by next week sorry for the delay the web designer is a volunteer for Kla Ha Ya Days. This is now a $10,000 total cash/prize event, there is. Chance it will become a $12,500 event. As it is right now we only have room for 36 KCBS teams and 20 backyard teams, so if you want to be a part of the fun register early @ www.klahayadays.com . We are doing something new this event we are having an awards banquet dinner included, so instead of just sitting around waiting we can be feeding our faces on something other than BBQ.
