I am dropping this forum thread now as all approved events can be found on the calendar page. Any newly approved events will be posted directly here http://pnwba.com/.

At the in-person board meeting it was decided that based on the current number of approved qualifying events in the Pacific Northwest that the calendar is at capacity based on projected/perceived number of teams. As such we are closing new applications for the 2012 season (May to September) to 2 day potential qualifying events. (Thus applications for off-season and 1 day events are still being accepted).

Focus is now on turning each potential qualifier into a qualifier, and satisfying the desired number of teams for each event as communicated by event sponsors, coordinators and charities.

There are a number of potential events that are not on the calendar but we are aware of, and will still be considered for this season. If you have such an event and are unsure if the event coordinator, me, is aware of it please contact me asap.

Please forward any questions to events@pnwba.com

Thanks,
Saffron

Thank you for the confirmation. Seriously looking into taking it.

The Yakima class will be added to the website soon.
Deena Posted - 03/27/2012 : 12:11:27
We have just confirmed the class in Yakima and it is on May 5th and will be added to the website calendar today.
mhaggart Posted - 03/27/2012 : 12:04:48
Is that the same for Judging class? The newsletter has a class in Yakima on May 5, but the calendar only has one in Portland on the 6th.
Deena Posted - 03/27/2012 : 10:38:32
The website calendar is the most up to date calendar.
kneznanski Posted - 03/27/2012 : 10:24:24
Question- Just received the newsletter and many of the dates are different or only show up as a single day versus multiple days on this calendar. And the newsletter doesn't match the websites Event Calendar page either. Can anyone direct me to the correct calendar?

Thanks!

Thanks for the info, and the hard work, Saffron!! Any word on Spring Training (Washington/Oregon)?? We like those one-day events! Hoping Moses Lake returns...as a one-day event also!?

I am working with a few people regarding one day events for this year and hope to have them announced soon. There will definitely be some and I am hoping more than last year.

Hey Saffron...any update on potential WA Spring Training one-day event?? Thanks!

Yes, the Cheney Jubilee target is $10K. We have raised a little over half that amount so far.

The sanctioning agreement has a predicted prize amount, competitions tend to underestimate rather than say higher then not be able to secure the prize money to the disappointment of teams.

The Agreement states the prize money needs to be guaranteed at 70 days prior to the event. There are many competitions trying to raise additional prize money before this time.

Darel: The prize money shown is the minimum they have guaranteed. They may, and probably, have a higher target they are shooting for.

Dead Man BBQ (Nancy & I) is presenting the Washington State Spring BBQ Championship at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe, WA. Being a first year event only 15 teams are required to make this a qualifier.

This sanctioned event is occuring with the Evergreen Spring Recreation and Sportsmen Expo. In conjunction with this event there will be a PNWBA Certified BBQ Judge class starting early Saturday morning. As part of BBQ's contribution to the overall event we are working to hold short free public BBQ classes on Saturday. To give back to the Sky Valley community we will be asking for teams to cook meat provided to them for our charity to sell to the public. Limited public sampling will be availiable on Sunday afternoon.

All spaces are sited on concrete or asphalt and will average 20 x 20 with a few 20x40 spaces availiable. Power, water, disposal are all provided. There will be a Sunday morning breakfast along with the customary 10 o'clock toast. This event is coming together quite nicely with tremendous support from fellow PNWBAers and local businesses.

We do have a few more time slots open on Saturday for those that would like to hold a short (~30m) class. These are geared more toward the backyarders and those interested in entering competition BBQ.

We have a few more details to nail down before we open registration next week.

You can contact us anytime at bryan@deadmanbbq.com

No Bull BBQ Championship is in Morgan Hill.

Not that I'm going or anything, but curious nonetheless... where at in CA?
Bush Cook Posted - 02/22/2012 : 17:09:00

Ok more updates...

As we have the sanctioning application from events, assign a head judge, confirm event coordinator and the board votes on them they become official and make the front page.

Aloha has changed its date to June 16th/17th to avoid a clash with Battle of the Bone and we are grateful and hope everyone supports this great event.
Battle of the Bone has over the last few year pulled their target number of teams from North California and we expect a good combination from both there and further north this year.
(Note of interest - events set dates - we can only suggest, approve/or not approve - we try to influence where possible to balance the calendar)

New events...
No Bull BBQ Championship in California! Expectation 50+ teams
Stumptown BBQ Smoke Off returns to Montana!
(yes, that is 4 events on one weekend but they are spread over 4 states and pulling from very different team pools).

Monroe is being organised by Brian from Dead Man BBQ.

Help Welcome!
Thinking of running for the board next year? Want to see what happens behind the scenes at an event? Just love to volunteer! I am looking for extra people to help with aspects of event planning and to help with coordination on the ground at events. Many hands make light work. Email me at events@pnwba.com

Want to take the next step and become a head judge - more head judges means more events. Interested, email me too! I just love getting emails from happy people wanting to help.

This is the wrong indormation Sky Valley BBQ Championship should not be listed as a PNWBA event, and will not be taking place the last weekend in April, I think there will be an event that weekend at the Monroe fairgrounds but it is NOT the Sky Valley BBQ Championship that was orginized by James and Suzanne. They will be having someone else do it this year under a different name. Smokey's will be in Utah at the Sams Club BBQ event competing. We will be having the Sky Valley BBQ Championship later in the year.
Please correct your information on this page as to not confuse people, thank you.

With our season as short as it is and everyone jumping on the BBQ comp bandwagon, stacked weekends are going to be more common. I'm envious of those teams able to travel, especially with higher fuel prices on the horizon. Looking at the schedule as it stands now, the spectrum of this year's competitions allows most of us to stay fairly local.

I've looked at the BOTB a few times each season and it looks like a fun time, even with their rules in place. I'm sure they will have no problem reaching local teams who cannot travel too far north for the majority of our events. I agree with Brian, I don't see too many CBBQA teams heading here to compete.

I've cooked Aloha for a few years and it's an awesome time. The guys running that Thriftway are wonderful hosts and though not exactly picturesque, that damn strip mall has just about everything a competition BBQ'r could need. If I remember, it was a few teams short of a qualifier last year, probably due to the Sisters comp happening that weekend. I wanted to cook that one as well. Same thing for Molalla. Even with a couple of teams willing to break up and cook, we were still short 2 teams needed to qualify.

I also cooked the BC Festival of Chili and BBQ last year and it was wonderful. Personally I love cooking in BC and Wayne and Dave put on a great competition.

Dale-

I posted a link to the Battle of the Bones in the CBBQA forum and at this time no one has expressed an interest in the event. When I took a look at previous years BOTB events there was only a handful of teams competing and none that I recognized. With all the rules for their event its no surprise that people are not jumping on this. I get the feeling from the NorCal teams that it is too far of a drive and would not count towards their coveted TOY points race. But for the right team it could be a Qualifier, which is why I voted to approve sanctioning.

Wayne and Dave have a good thing going with the BC event and I don't think there will be a problem there.
Aloha has been on my radar and I think its in the cross hairs this year, has there ever been a problem drawing teams to this event?

Hey.. all people have been asking about certain events.. we are still adding events to the calendar... so just because your favorite event is not listed yet.. does not mean it is not, It may just mean we haven't received their app and had it voted on by the board yet..
MADDOG Posted - 02/18/2012 : 12:01:38
Gary did you start that damned fire? Was that you trying to like a smoke off the refinery burners?

WOW!
What a lot of hard work! We are lucky to have you Saffron. Looking forward to seeing everyone again this year.
MADDOG Posted - 02/15/2012 : 23:16:55
I'm really starting to like this year's schedule of events. I personally think Saffron is working her Australian "Sheila" magic and making things just come together naturally. Take for example the KCBS comp up in Sisters, OR, Fri & Sat, June 29/30th. So, we finish up there and drive an hour and a half, 77 miles west, down the road back toward I-5 and stop at the town of Mill City where we have a PNWBA one-day, first year event on Sunday, July 1st. Now what could be more convenient?!?
Deena Posted - 02/14/2012 : 09:00:35
These are the same event. It is in Chilliwack. It is a two day event.
JuniorBalloon Posted - 02/14/2012 : 08:29:27
I see on the Calendar page an event called the Big Red Barn Burner, a one day event in Langley. On the Draft calendar there is an Event called the Big Red Barn Burner that is being held on the 24th and 25th in Chilliwack. Are these both happening?

Thanks,
Brian

I have heard rumors that the Pacific Northwest Evergreen Eggfest will be happening on Saturday June, 9 (same as McKinley Springs date)

Great time for those looking to get a discounted BGE, accessories or just show off.

Not a PNWBA event just an FYI.
