It is that time again to plan your trip to Montana for the Montana State BBQ Championship. For those of you that have not attended in previous years, the 8th Annual Montana State Barbecue Championship - "Smokin' in the 'Root" - occurs in conjunction with the Bitterroot Valley's largest community event, the Creamery Picnic. This year is the 97th year and will be held on August 7th and 8th in Stevensville, which is located approximately 30 miles south of Missoula. Events planned at this year's family friendly Picnic will include a kids' parade, car show, 1 mile, 5K and 10K fun runs, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a grand parade, brew fest, ice cream garden, live entertainment Friday night and all day Saturday, an all-valley teen dance on Saturday night, kids games all day Saturday, and of course the BBQ competition. The BBQ competition is one of the main events of the weekend and the locals look forward to sampling the amazing, mouthwatering food that is produced during the event. One of the biggest advantages to this competition is that you are able to sell your BBQ to the public, much like another vendor that attends the Picnic. This helps competitor’s recoup some of their travel expenses incurred getting to, and competing in, the competition. For the last four years, there was approximately $20,000 worth of BBQ sold at the event each year.
